| THE NETHERLANDS: GENERAL INFORMATION |
INFRASTRUCTURE
The Netherlands have historically known a close network of rail-, land- and waterways for the transport of goods and people.
Schiphol
Schiphol International Airport near Amsterdam is a major hub for flights to hundreds of destinations across the globe.
Rotterdam
Rotterdam has the largest harbor in the world, where transfer, storage and processing of oil are very important.
Telecommunication and Internet
There is obviously also a dense network for all kinds of electronic communication. This network is continuing to expand. This and the introduction of new techniques enables the available capacity to grow rapidly.
Capacity growth is necessary because of the growing demand.
The strong increase in usage of the Internet and Internet applications is also of considerable importance. The penetration degree of Internet usage in the Netherlands is high. At this moment over 4.7 million people, one third of the population, have their own Internet connection.
Approximately half of the total population have access to the Internet, either at home or at work. These percentages are increasing every month.
The increasing availability of Internet applications plays an important part when it comes to the growth of Internet usage. For example, companies with several branches in the Netherlands and the world, set up their own Intranets. The general public also benefits via electronic banking or investing in shares and futures via the Internet.
Strong competition between cable network operators and Internet providers continue to put the cost price under pressure. The Dutch can thus communicate with the rest of the world for a relatively low price and they enjoy doing so.
